Correspondence : 1791-1793.

Archive of 273 holograph copies of commercial correspondence sent by a partner in the international trading concern, the Compagnie des Indes. The letters are addressed to partners, merchants, suppliers, creditors as well as debtors, and provide valuable testimony for the conduct of business during the early years of the French Revolution. The correspondence concerns transportation by sea, packaging and transport of various types of goods (Indian linen, fabric, coffee, wine, Chinese Export Porcelain), various contracts and investments, tariffs and the devaluation of promissory notes. Letters to correspondents based in France, elsewhere in Europe, in the East, and (only 10 letters) in the New World, reveal the business climate in those parts of the world. Of the 10 letters sent to Santo Domingo, four are to Deonna's brother, Gaspard, who was managing a branch there. Despite the uprising in Santo Domingo in August of 1791, he trusts that peace will come sooner there than in France, and urges his brother to remain. He further councils his brother to ship to Holland rather than to France, since in France, payment is made by promissary notes, which are deeply discounted.
